Liver Function Test (LFT)
Liver Function Tests (LFTs) are a group of blood tests that assess how well your liver is working. They measure the levels of enzymes, proteins, and substances produced or processed by the liver. These tests are crucial for detecting liver inflammation, damage, infections, or diseases like hepatitis, fatty liver, or cirrhosis.
LFTs typically include the following key parameters:
Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) and Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST): Enzymes that rise when the liver is damaged.
Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP): Elevated in bile duct or bone disorders.
Bilirubin (Total & Direct): Indicates liver’s ability to process waste.
Doctors recommend LFTs for individuals experiencing symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes), fatigue, abdominal swelling, dark urine, or right upper abdominal pain. It is also used to monitor side effects of medications, alcohol use, and chronic conditions like hepatitis B/C.
